A New Mattress and More Projects as a Result

bedOver the weekend the wife and I went mattress hunting for a King size replacement for our Queen size Serta mattress.

The main reason for the new mattress was that we have both been have back problems from the mattress sagging in the middle. This was really disappointing since the mattress was only 4 years old. It may have been due to the fact that it had pillow soft on both sides but regardless – we needed a new one.

This time around we wanted a King size so that when when one of the kids decides that they want to sleep with us instead of in their room then we can all fit comfortably in the bed.

We ended up settling for a Sealy mattress and paid more then I wanted for it (don’t you always pay more then you want for these type of things?). The nice part about it was that it was delivered the same day so we were able to get a good night sleep.

The only issue surrounding the new mattress is that with our Queen sized one we had a very nice oak bed frame and head board that my Grandpa had made us for our wedding. With the new mattress we have nothing and it looks so plain and unfinished in our room.

The wife and I have been talking about getting new furniture and I have wanted my crack at building it myself so now I have my chance. Also my brother-in-law ask if I would help him build a new dresser since his store-bought one is falling apart. Along with that my wife wants my desk and the computer out of the room and put into a build in bookcase/desk combination (also to built by me) in the family room.

I have gotten busy all of a sudden.

My plan is to start small and help my brother-in-law with his dresser as a test piece. I am pretty good with all of my tools but have only down rough carpentry and outdoor stuff up until this point. I have not done any finish carpentry. The main things that I am concerned about are straight/square cuts and the final staining and finishing. Everything else is pretty straight forward.

Anyway it looks like I will transitioning into the full fledged furniture maker here pretty soon.

Fun!
