About the Site

The Masters House Web Site is blog documenting the improvements and projects done to our house.

These improvements can be anything from changing the type of light bulb that we use for energy purposes to building an additional room on the house.

I originally started documenting the progress of the construction of the house over at our family web – The Masters Family. I wanted to have more in-depth posts about the projects that were going to to do on the house so I started The Masters House Web Site.

Hopefully The Masters House Web Site will be motivating to people to fix up their house. It really is not to difficult and the rewards are awesome. If it doesn't motivate you then hopefully it is at least entertaining.

About the House

Our house is located in Round Rock, Texas which is just north of Austin.

We purchase this house after leaving Southern California because of the expensive housing prices and terrible traffic.

In California we had a 750SQFT 2 bedroom, 1 bath house in the not-so-great part of town. We sold that house for almost $500,000. My commute was about 1 hour each way to work.

In Texas we got this house for around a third of the cost of the house in California. It is in a great neighbor hood. My commute here is 25 minutes and 10 of those minutes are from stopping to get coffee at 7/11.

The specifics of the house are:

  • Builder: D.R. Horton
  • Square Feet: 2137
  • Rooms: 4 including a formal dining room, regular dining room, and family room.
  • Corner lot (so it is a little bit bigger the the standard size)

The house was a "Spec Home". That means we got an excellent deal on it but in return we really did not get to change very much.

The choices we did have were –

  • Carpet and Tile colors
  • Kitchen and Bathroom cabinet colors
  • Kitchen Counter top color
  • Outside Brick Style and Color

That is it. But in return for our lack of choices. This is what was included –

  • 3 sides brick
  • Wiring for ceiling fans in every room
  • Sod in the front / back yards
  • Painted walls (instead of standard white)
  • Tile in the entry, kitchen, baths, laundry, and baths.
  • All appliances – gas stove, dishwasher, fridge, washer and dryer
  • Covered patio

About the Authors

My name is Dan Masters. I author this site along with my wife Elsy.

I have been working on DIY home improvement projects ever since I was 10 years old and moved in to a new house with my parents.

My real job is a Product Manager at an internet startup company that does web analytics. I also pick up a few web site projects on the side through my company Round Rock Web Design. My personal blog about Web Design, Blogging, and SEO is idano.net.

I am pretty much a hands-on type of guy that believes that he can do anything if he puts his mind to it. I also subscribe to theory that just because you "can" do something, doesn't mean you "should" (AKA. know your limits).

My wife is not as much into the construction aspect of the house as she is into the decorating it. She loves to send me out into the garage to build stuff that she puts her womanly touch to. She has a good eye for fashion and an even but one for good prices. Together we are making our new house into a home.

Please keep in mind that I am not a professional contractor and my wife is not a professional decorator. We are just DIY home improvement people that just happen to know how to take pictures and setup a web site.

Please be sure to READ OUR DISCLAIMER to understand our responsibility ( = None) if you try to do the stuff you see on this web site yourself.
