DR Horton Warranty Repair Issues – Final Round – Winner – Draw
I stayed home yesterday in anticipation of the roofer. I am glad that I did as the guy for the door and the paint guy showed up before the roofer did.
The Door Guy
The door guy fixed the door in 5 minutes as it was obviously a simple fix. The door now has no gaps and both the dead bolt and the door knob both close and lock. My wife mentioned that the door looked a little crooked in the frame. I told her it didn’t matter as long as it closed, locked, and didn’t leak. A new door is on the project list in the coming years anyway.
The Painter
The painter showed up and painted the spot on the roof in the family room. Then he went around the house and paint a whole bunch of other spots while making his way to the master bathroom. I was not expecting that and thought that it was cool. We corralled the kids outside while the paint dried.
The Roofer
The roofer showed up a little early which was nice. I showed him where the tape was coming apart inside the attic. He politely let me know that he was a roofer and only took care of the top part of the roof and that the AC (ducting guys) would need to fix that. He said that he would take a look on top anyway to see if anything needed to be fixed. He also welcomed me up with him if I wanted.
I went up on the roof with the roofer.
After inspecting the whole roof he found the one that was causing the leaks. He told me that the vent that was there was not very good and that whoever put it in did not do a very good job. He showed me where they had just caulked it instead of putting a shingle to cover a gap. He also showed me where he had seen other vents similar to ours that had leaked at other people’s homes. He said that he would seal them so we would not have the same problem.
The Conclusion (I Hope)
As noted in the title I consider this boxing match with DR Horton a draw as nobody really won. I had to go through 4 people to get 3 pretty minor things fixed – that sucks. They had to come out 4 times for the door, 2 times for the nail pops, and 4 times for the roof – that sucks for them.
Hopefully I shook things up enough to where they have a little more follow though in regards to warranty claims in the future. I really hope I do not need to find out. I am out of warranty in a month from now so I guess it is good that I got all these things done now.
So my final word is this – DR Horton builds very nice, affordable, and quality home. You may need to crack the whip here and there though if there are some issues that come up. Would I buy from them again? Yes, because when it comes down to it they stand behind their product and try to make you happy. I think that is all you can every ask from a company or even an individual.

In the future try contacting the trade and/or the vendor directly. It is not difficult obtaining a vendor list from your sales office. Remember you still have your two year warranty which includes any behind the wall electrical or plumbing concerns you may encounter. I use to work for D.R Horton as a customer service rep. so I can empathize with your plight. Please let me know if I can help. tony-rrttlang@sbcglobal.net
