The Difference in Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs
The Ceiling Fan
After almost a year I finally got around to putting up a ceiling fan in my son’s room. I had bought one at the same time as the rest of the ceiling fans for the house with the intent to paint it to match the theme for his room - NASCAR / the movie Cars.
My ambition melted away from doing this while painting the ceiling fan for my daughter’s room. While her ceiling fan came out alright I was not confident that I would be able to pull off a paint job that would be worthy of NASCAR
.
To remedy this I decided that I would buy a new ceiling fan for him instead and use the one I originally bought for him in the garage since it can get pretty warm out there. After looking around I really did not find anything within the sub $100 range that I was willing to spend.
A couple of weeks ago the wife and I were at Lowes looking at ceiling fans and she found the one above that she felt was perfect. While I liked the look of the ceiling fan the price - $169 - was more then I wanted to spend. I told her that we should keep looking for something cheaper.
A week later I put it on order at Lowes.
The installation was easy (after 6 installs it should be). The only issue was that it used candelabra style bulbs as opposed to regular bulbs. I made a quick trip to Walmart to pick some up.
CFL Light Difference
I found the candelabra fluorescent bulbs at Walmart with no problem. I took them home and promptly installed them.
Right away I noticed that the light seemed to be “different” in some way but I could not put my finger on it. The sun was still out (even though it was cloudy) so I though it might be a combination of the light from outside with the new bulbs that made it seem weird.
I checked back after the sun had set and sure enough - the light was a really weird white. It was a definite contrast to the rest of the lights in the house even though they were all fluorescent also. The only way that I could describe the way it made me feel was - it made my stomach sick. Before I had not believed people when they said that they did not fluorescent bulbs for this reason but I totally understand. I guess inadvertently I had been buying the more natural light bulbs that have a more yellow glow to them.
I checked out the package for the bulbs and they claim to be more on the “Warm White” side of the scale as opposed to the “Sunlight” side. The sunlight side is definitely where I want to be.
Conclusion
So there you have it. There is definitely a difference between the “style” of CFL bulbs - either “White” light or “Sunlight”. If you want something that is going to be more like the standard incandescent bulbs then you definitely want to go with the ones that are on the “Sunlight” side of the scale.
